What are backflow prevention services and why are they important?
Backflow prevention services are necessary in commercial areas where a number of different devices are connected to both the freshwater and wastewater lines. In the event of an extreme loss in pressure, such as that which can occur when a pipe breaks, a backflow can be created, making it possible to contaminate the freshwater source. A backflow prevention program can make certain backflow preventers are working properly in order to avoid backflow prevention violations.
What are backflow preventers?
A backflow preventer is a device which prevents water from moving in the opposite direction in a plumbing system. For example, if a vacuum is created on the freshwater side due to a power outage or a mainline break, the potential exists for the dirty water to back up into the freshwater system. A backflow preventer stops this from happening.
Backflow can occur in the following instances:
- A broken water distribution pipe or water main
- Drainage from properties resulting from plumbing work
- Large quantities of water used by firefighters during emergencies
- Equipment or processes using pressure greater than that of the normal water distribution
- Large-scale power outages
